Get sod off for a great start
Get sod off for a great start
Many businesses and homeowners are getting ready for spring by preparing their landscaping. Is your lawn in need of some improvement? If your grass appears duller than it was last year, you may want to put down some sod or call the professionals.
Different kinds of sod
- Centipedes: Low maintenance and can be found in warmer climates
- St. Augustine: Popular, thicker lawn that requires some maintenance
- Bermuda: This grass is thick and requires lots of sunlight. This grass is also used as turf.
- Zoysia grass: A high-quality grass that requires some maintenance. It is best to grow in lower temperatures.
Choose the best type of sod.
There are things you should take into account when choosing the right type of sod for your yard.
- Temperature: Do your surroundings get little rain or high temperatures in the summer? Some grasses are more resilient than others.
- Uses: In what type of place will the sod be placed? Lot or less traffic area?
- Sun exposure: Some kinds of sod require a lot of light. Are you in a sunny location?
- Management: Will you be willing to invest some time or hire a professional to keep the yard looking great?
Preparation
Make sure to rake your yard and get rid of any stones or pebbles in the soil before you sod it. Your yard should be flat and even. You can also add a starter mix of fertilizer in either liquid or powder form.
DIY?
Installing sod in small areas might be possible. You should not attempt to install sod in a large area unless you are an experienced installer.
Maintaining the property
- The following are some of the things you can do to help newly planted sod take root.
- First, ensure that the new sod is kept moist for at least one week to allow the root to establish and grow.
- Next, keep the area free from foot traffic for the first few weeks. This is vital for proper root formation.
- Let it grow. Don't trim the grass at this stage, and don't use any weed killers. The first few weeks are the best time to let the sod grow naturally.
